Darling If You Want Me To

Performance

MKNZ

2014

"On April 11th of last year, 2013, artist couple Taylor Pinton and MKNZ performed Blind Faith at Hard L Gallery in Seattle. During the performance, the two artists sat on cinder blocks on opposite sides of a large, leaning wall. The wall was suspended over Pinton and supported by a pulley system, which was anchored in MKNZ’s right hand. The two were unable to see one another. While MKNZ supported the entire weight of the leaning wall with her right arm, her left arm penetrated a small hole in middle of the wall. The wall vibrated and lurched sporadically, narrowing the space that cushioned Pinton while gradually forcing MKNZ to double over. The exposed skin of her forearm was concurrently tattooed by Pinton, with imagery unknown to MKNZ at the time of the performance.

The process lasted a total of 55 minutes and concluded when Pinton finished the tattoo. The uncertainty and tension of the performance left both artists exhausted.

The tattoo on MKNZ’s forearm reads, in Pinton’s handwriting, darling if you want me to, a lyric from Prince’s “I Would Die 4 U”.

In December 2013 the couple abruptly split.

On April 18th, 2014, MKNZ will recreate the performance, unaccompanied, with a ceramic cinder block situated where Pinton would have been. This sculpture is a hand-built imitation of the cinder block Pinton sat on during the original performance. MKNZ will sustain the suspended wall over the fragile replica for 55 minutes.

The revised performance is titled, Darling If You Want Me To. “
